And Angelina Jolie doesn't save the film. There's no relationship between poverty and radical Islam. There comes a point when you just want to fast forward through it to the end. Her words are, I'm sure, haunting and filled with an unbearable amount of love, both lost and strengthened. I purposely bought this movie because the news did not give the whole story.
But the human story gets buried underneath the complex web of details, and despite a solid performance from Angelina Jolie as Pearl's remarkably stoic wife Mariane, I wasn't much moved by the film. It's a moving film, and Jolie plays the wife of the assassinated journalist well. The movie is a whirlwind of frenzied cuts which show life in Kerachi, but there's nothing else really: leads, phone calls, emails, we all know what the end will be, so ultimately, there's really nothing here outside of Jolie's beautiful face. That can be a problem with making a movie about real life investigations--the actual investigators are working for days, and so there's time for them to make sense of it all. This is what the entire movie is about for me. Telling the truth is generally considered to be the first step on the path to righteousness. This movie gives a good account of the harrowing experience of Mariane Pearl from the moment her husband Danny went missing until he was beheaded. Angelina Jolie did a wonderful job in my opinion and really made you feel what Mariane must've felt.
